Doug Murphy – guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals
Paul Hamilton – percussion, voice
Acting on the credo that “A wrong note is an error but a wrong note repeated is an arrangement”, D.M.P.H.’s music bear the scars of spontaneity. Almost everything on Only Two Can Play and BIG BUN – from the live-in-the-studio drums-&-bass rhythm tracks through to the guitar and vocal overdubs – are first takes.
Far from being Luddites, DMPH have resisted embracing modern technology. They believe that if you use the same gadgets as everyone else – Autotune, click tracks, loops, off-the-shelf effects – you will sound like everyone else. They remain true to their D.I.Y. aesthetic.
With Murphy high-kicking it in Norway and Hamilton foot-dragging in England, they have been unable to lark about in a studio together since 2017, and their recent work has been conducted via the internet. Despite the spatial gap, they continue to find ways of upsetting the cart of predictability.
